The second January tornado outbreak in three years swept across western and middle Tennessee tonight.
An intense squall line blew through the mid-state at 50 mph. At least 12 tornados touched down.
Eight people were killed. Jackson, Tenneessee was the hardest hit. What could have been an F4 tornado
killed 6 people there.
The squall line entered Davidson county at about 8:00 P.M. A very vivid lightning display lit what
would have been very impressive arcus clouds. As the line hit, there was one very strong wind gust
(60 mph?) followed by heavy rain and small hail. A funnel cloud was reported south of downtown, but
it is doubtful that a tornado touched down there.
